Stun guns use high voltage and low amperage to temporarily disable an attacker. Stun guns do not rely on pain for results. They will confuse our body's communication system. The energy stored in stun guns is dumped into an assailant’s muscles and nerves causing the signals to get mixed up with "noise". The size of the gun doesn't equate to effectiveness. A "mini stun gun" can be just as effective. It is the voltage and the duration of contact. In short, the attacker is unable to produce energy for the muscles, and the body is unable to function properly. Theoretically, the higher the voltage means the shorter time it takes immobilize an attacker. In other words, less confrontation time. You would want to have the highest power available if possible. However, even though the voltage is higher, the current is still very low (about 3-milliamp amperage, just like lower voltage models) which makes these stun guns just as less lethal as other lower voltage models.
Stun guns deliver high voltage (very fast) combined with a low amperage (low intensity) charge to temporarily confuse the attacker's nervous system thus disabling an attacker long enough for you to escape to safety. The high voltage stun guns allows the charge to quickly pass through clothing and skin, but the low 3-milliamp amperage is not intense enough to damage the attacker's body (unless applied for an extended period of time). Since the current produced by stun guns affects the person's muscles and nerves, it doesn't matter where you apply the current because there are muscles and nerves all over the body.

These will generally be the size of a cell phone, blackberry, pager etc. However, the size of the mini stun gun will not effect the number of volts emitted.
